Litter.Mapper mobile app

Litter.Mapper is a mobile application designed to support the collection and visualization of litter data, particularly in marine and coastal environments. Inspired by OSPAR guidelines for beach litter monitoring, the app empowers citizen scientists, researchers, and environmental agencies to easily record, categorize, and upload litter observations using geolocation, photos, and metadata such as material type and usage. The app avoids clustering markers to ensure that each individual observation is clearly visible on the map, supporting high-resolution analysis of litter distribution patterns.

All data collected through Litter.Mapper is uploaded to the https://kladia.info server, which is part of the broader mybiOSis ecosystem. mybiOSis is a collaborative platform for biodiversity research, centered around the Natural Diversity Observation Repository (NDOR) — a global database that catalogs species, habitats, and ecological interactions. Within this system, kladOS serves as an integrated desktop-like toolkit for exploring and managing biodiversity data. As part of kladOS, the Litter.Mapper web application provides an interface for visualizing, filtering, and analyzing data collected with the mobile app, making it a valuable tool for scientific insight, environmental education, and policy support.

The Litter.Mapper app will soon be available for download on Google Play, making it even easier to contribute to marine litter monitoring directly from your smartphone.
